Hey guys,
Here's some more finalized sketches of Mokarita & Tahama that incorporated the crits we discussed on Friday. Theres some wonky anatomy in places, I apologize, but I felt I should get this out as soon as possible for the animators, I'll rework these tonight and post fixes.
But I think these should at least give you guys a place to start from. I don't think there will be any major changes to body types/silouhettes or changes in props. I will do a quick prop sheet for the stuff that's on Tahama for clarity, as well as reference callouts.
As always, let me know what you think and I'll address any glaring errors.

I definitely like these designs so far, Alex. The feather crown and the accessories on each character are awesome and unique. A couple things I'd nitpick are:

What if there was more of a height difference?
What if the characters had pupils? May be easier to make them relatable.
Yeah, already refining that belly, once I put those up and really look ed at them side by side, it bugged me too. I'll give the Chief a more trimmed down mid section.
ReplyDeleteI had the chief really tiny originally, top of his head at Tahama's shoulder height, but it seemed a bit pushed to me right off the cuff. But I'll go ahead and post a shorter version and see how it strikes you.
As far as pupils go, yeah they will definitly have them, at this stage with the markers it's too unwieldy to get into those spaces right now and throw one in there without totally losing the eye shape.

i had a question, on the tahama drawing is that an arrow on his head? it reminds me too much of airbender even though the lines arent connected my brain is making that association....otherwise i really like the chief and agree that he should be shorter than tahama and i also like the tahama drawing as well
ReplyDeletei was reviewing your drawings again and i really think Tahama should be the leaner of the two considering he is a hunter...i think it would be a bit strange if he had a pot belly/ chubby-ness going on...

ReplyDeleteI'm really liking the drawings. Looking at it more, I really like how you were able to get this shape of his torso without making it look like he's fat. While I don't mind the barrel chest, it does feel weird that they both have the same design in the midsection.
What is the negative shape between the arm and the torso of Tahama look like? Maybe try a pose where he's climbing when things are figured out more and see how things play against each other?
I'm a little confused what I'm looking at on the side of Tahama's head as well.
Going to wait till you have another version of the chief before I say something. Really interested in seeing what you come up with. :)
Thanks for the crit Danny, yeah I'm already editing the chief to be slimmer like Mike suggested, I didn't get that "oh duh" moment until I put them side by side. And yeah I'll clarify the hair shape on Tahama's head, need to take a min to really plan that shape out in a 3D space.
DeleteI added the huskiness in response to a crit on Friday, he was described as being huskier than the rest in the book. And it really isn't a pot belly in the sense that you're thinking. Most of the men tend to look like that when they are on the more weighty side (its not necessarily fat) .
ReplyDeleteI'll post reference as to what I was looking at when I made that decision. I understand where you're coming from, but I believe it may be a misconception. Perhaps if I added some more straights to the belly it might describe it better as muscle rather than fat.
I'll see what I can do about it, but I feel like something related to the larger mid section shape I have there will be needed.
About the line across his nose, it's a reed piercing, I will do something about it to make it look like less of an arrow.

ReplyDeleteIt would be awesome to see you incorporate some of the scars from the passages that Danny mentioned...
Also, Can you possibly do a more economical version of the designs for the animators? There is alot of extraneous stuff going on in the designs, and that would be really hard to animate a character climbing up a cliff with all that stuff on. Also it will be really hard to incorporate/make that stuff to go on the rig. Maybe you could choose one or two design elements that are really important to you, and make another version that just includes those so that we can have a more clear idea of what to include and what we don't have to include with the morphy rig.
I remember Danny did that with his character designs for the Wishing Well project. He had really elaborate, awesome sketches for his character, but they were impossible to incorporate into animation/the rig. So he chose one element (the hat) to keep in the design and eliminated the rest (for the purpose of animation).
It would be SUPER helpful if you could give us a simplified version to work off of.
